My first ride up the local mountain since my meltdown last year.

Hi guys,
I have been slowly been building up my ride distance over the last year, and now I can ride comfortably 30 km with not many hills. As soon as the road goes sky wards my heart rate really advances towards its max, and I have too back off.

For my friends who don't ride or are overseas, 10 km away from home is a mountain range called " The Dandenong's" the highest point is about 600m above sea level. 7 years ago when I was really fit, I could go up the 6.7km mountain hwy road in 20.5 mins. The record is 13mins for a pro rider.

Two months ago I rode up only part way, yesterday I felt like I needed to test my self and get a new base time for myself, so I would have a benchmark for my fitness.

It was a warmish Melbourne day with a forecast of 35c deg. When I started it was 28C, I really took it easy on the 10km ride to the start, there was allot of pollen in the air and my nose and eyes where telling me that. I got to the start at the Basin, pressed the lap time on my garmin gps and I was off for my new record? I tried to keep my pedal cadence just above 60rpm on my easiest gear to keep my HR below 155bpm, I could manage this for most of the climb, and with one kilometre to go I gave as best I could.
My result, 30 mins, I'm happy with that, have something to work with. It will be interesting to see what time I can do on my lighter performance folding bike a Bikefriday it's 2kg lighter and has 20" wheels.

Buy for now :)

Why I love stage 15 Tour de France 1994! http://youtu.be/VHTuS7t7EBE

Theres a Young World champ Lance Armstrong.
Two neo pro's, Aussie Neill Stevens and Stephan Hodge.
Big Miguel Indurain.
Tom Simpson memorial.
My memories of Climbing up Mt Ventoux, which I climbed in 1998 while living/ bike touring in Europe.
A youngish Marco Pantanni with some hair appears!
One of my favourite Italian riders " Eros Poli" who is 6'4" or 194cm like me and who does well in this stage which was unusual.

Any comments? Let me know.

Cheers Carl,

my thoughts on Lance Armstrong

My thoughts on Lance dopping:
The more I think about it, I'm with skippy (Phill Anderson). Lance was the best of the pack in the era of doping.
I can understand in what he did, other teams where doping and he was getting his Ass whipped. So he did what he could do to make it a level playing field. I guess it's like me and my 30 year old steel racing bike, it's mass is 11 kg. Now if I want the same advantage when going up hill as my friends who ride 6-8 kg machines, I would have to get a lighter bike or deal with the energy expenditure of carrying an extra 5 full water bottles up hill ~ (4kg). Carrying that extra mass over a number of climbs will certainly take its toll.

Now I don't condone his bullying of others to keep his secret. That's bad form.
Being a Cancer surviver myself, I like what he has done with his live-strong company, and his fight against cancer.

Bestest Carl.

Free info: how to sweep the pavement with your face.

I went for a ride this morning with my friend JFM,
I was only 5mins from home and I tried to sweep the pavement with my face, the pavement won!
Right knee is a small balloon. Chipped front tooth.
Was going under 20km and turned my wheel, and shabam, the front wheel just came out underneath me,
on this light mud covered bitumen. Just got back from dentist, Ripped my new castelli white arm warmers,
luckily I didn't wear my wool Moltini jersey! Will get a cap Tuesday, maybe a crown later on?
Ride on!
Cheers Carl

What my son said to me

I said to my son "want to come out with me on an adventure?".
He said " Nah, do a video of it, and I'll watch it"
WTF!
He is 5 years old.
